This will help you in judging the best available facility (eye hospital). And if you have chosen your eye hospital then feel free to consult and ask your eye doctor about the number of eye operations conducted, type of introcular lens insertions, general cleanliness and infection free environment. 4. QUESTION:
How good does your eye vision have to be to become a retinal eye surgeon?
I have had retina detachment surgery 3 times in my left eye, and I will be going for my 4th and final surgery in the summer. I want to become a retinal surgeon when I'm older and just need to know if it's possible. Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
I understand your desire to work in a profession that has benefited you so much. However, a retina specialist needs very sharp vision. Although special tools are used to view the retina, the surgeon needs to be able to see precisely what is wrong and where he needs to be with his lasers or other instruments. A retina surgeon has to do well in medical school. This is difficult for most with normal vision and keeping up with reading for a person with low vision would be even more difficult. I think there might be a great role for someone with your interests in patient counseling in a retina specialist's office.

  5. QUESTION:
How long do I have to study to become and eye surgeon?
I heard some people said about 11 years... but is there anyone who actually IS an eye surgeon or at least knows how long it will take? . By the way, I am in high school but I'm not including it- just the years in university and stuff.

    • ANSWER:
It's a long, long road to do almost anything in the medical field. In the United States you have to go to 4 years of undergraduate school. Then another 4 years of medical school. Then it's usually a year as an intern. They 3-5 years training in a residency program before you are a full fledged surgeon. So that's about 11-13 years, give for take depending on if you graduate early/late, etc. Good luck!

Can anyone recommend a good laser eye surgeon in San Diego?
I am trying to choose a laser eye surgeon in San Diego and have discovered that everyone and their brother is doing laser eye surgery! Can anyone recommend a good laser eye surgeon? How about one to avoid?? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
How about this. Go to maloneyvision.com Dr. maloney is in the top 10 surgeons that do refractive surgery in the US. He conducts trials for the FDA. He is the Dr. On the makeover shows. Plus, he is a NICE MAN! (I do NOT work for him, BTW) His best selling book is available to read online FREE and it tells you how to find a good doctor in your area, what questions to ask, how to check out their credentials and all that stuff! Oh, yeah, and plus if you contact them they will refer you to a good one there where you are as well. OR, you can drive a little ways up north and see him in Los Angeles. He is the top in So. CA. I have met him twice and toured his facility once. His people and his business are very very nice and he will not do surgery on you if you do not meet the basic requirements that your eyes should to continue on to have surgery. He does tell people, "NO! You should not do this!" when other doctors will cut! He also fixes the problems that other places cause. We have many of his patients in our office for before and after care, and also to do contacts and glasses for the ones he can not see. We are almost an hour and a half away, and people in our area go down to him all the time, so we are exposed to him quite often. Go check them out! You will be amazed what you can learn from his web site. Good luck!

My advice would be to talk to everyone....talk to your family, friends and co-workers. Then ask your family, friends and co-workers to talk to their family, friends and co-workers....you get the idea. I found my surgeon by word of mouth. I asked everyone I know if they had Lasiks (or knew anyone who had Lasiks), and what doctor they went to. Almost everyone I talked to in my area went to the surgeon I ended up going to, and everyone was perfectly satisfied. I went into the procedure very confident! Good luck to you!

I searched the net< but everybody charging money for doctors background check!!! Please Help????

Don't ask the surgeons. As you would expect every surgeon thinks they are the best surgeon out there. Go to the doctors that refer to the surgeons. They will know who is the best. So ask around and find out which optometrist has the best reputation in town and take your son to see him or her. Then depend upon their experience to direct you to the best surgeon. Hope this helped.

  13. QUESTION:
What should I take into consideration when looking for a lasik eye surgeon?
If I want lasik surgery, how do I find the most reputable DR? Do insurance companies cover any of it? I'm trying to sort all this out, I've been considering it. I don't want to pay too much, but I don't want to pay to little at the expense of my eyes. What should I be looking for?

    • ANSWER:
Depending where you live a good surgeon costs about ,000 and up depending on what your prescription is. I would ask how long they have been doing Laisk and how many procedures they have done, and how many they do weekly or monthly. Moist insurances do not cover lasik, they might pay a couple hundred dollars. The best way to find out if a surgeon is good at lasik is by word of mouth. A nationwide clinic like TLC is a good bet. I know they hire well qualified surgeons and do tons of lasik weekly.

  17. QUESTION:
Where should I go for the best laser eye surgeon in Sydney, Australia ?
My contact lens prescription is -11.0 on both eyes and have asigmatism.

    • ANSWER:
Every country and location has a medical board. Doctors who have problems get listed as having citations, etc. When you choose a doctor don't go to a chop shop clinic. Pick a board-certified ophthalmologist who has specialized in laser correction. He should take a complete history, check your eyes - especially your corneas for thickness & other factors, and do a thorough eye exam before he ever agrees to do laser on you.

Chop shop docs can put thru a dozen patients an hour and don't care how many are left blinded or with permanent problems. They don't do complete histories or eye exams. They want you to sign on the dotted line. Some offer same day surgery the same day - or next day after you walk in!! Boy, is that a red flag!!!! Remember laser is NOT without risks! A high percentage end up with night vision problems, not to mention risk of blindness, etc.

Ask the doctor up front for his full credentials, where & when he trained, how many problems he's had, [if he claims none, run.....he's lying]. and where he got his laser training & how long it's been since he took a refresher in the latest procedures. Good docs don't mind bragging about their backgrounds. Any doc who tries to give you the brush -off on this you leave - fast.

      good luck!

  18. QUESTION:
Is an ophthalmologist the same thing as an eye surgeon?

I was just wondering because I was watching a murder show where an eye surgeon was a suspect. They kept calling him an 'eye surgeon'. So I thought isn't that the same thing as an ophthalmologist? Or do certain eye injuries require a different kind of eye surgeon?

    • ANSWER:
You have to be an ophthamologist to do eye surgery (optometrists/opticians can't and other MDs/surgeons wouldn't), but you don't *have* to do eye surgery if you're an ophthamologist. Some specialize in other things like treatment of eye health conditions that don't require surgery.

I would imagine the show referred to him as an eye surgeon instead of an ophthamologist simply because it's easier for the audience to understand (a lot of people don't know the difference between the kinds of "eye doctors" or what exactly an ophthamologist is).

  19. QUESTION:
Are Marines allowed to get PRK eye surgery from a civilian eye surgeon?
Just wondering if this is allowed if the wait list to get PRK from the Navy doctors is too long, and if it is allowed, how long will recovery take? I'm willing to pay for it out of pocket. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
In short, yes. You can opt for a civilian surgery if you pay out of pocket. Recovery time really depends on individuals, I think you could get this answer simply by contacting the office of the eye doctor which you are considering for surgery.

You should expect to have a number of follow up appointments which you will need to fit in your schedule as well.

      Hope this helps.

  43. QUESTION:
An eye surgeon, nerve specialist please reply.?
I have a daugter who is 8 yrs old. Recently we came to china from Sri Lanka in order to attend a course for a period of one year. after arriving china ( a day after) we noticed her right eye has moved towards the bridge of the nose ( symptoms of cross-eyes ?). she was complaining of double vision and when the left eye is closed the right eye focusses itself.
next day morning when she got up her eye was normal and it stayed like that for the whole day, but the next morning again the eye has moved in. this has been happening for a while . as instructed by doctors we have done eye tests, EEgs and now planning on a MRI. doctors say it is emergency common esotropia but as for the symptoms it cannot be random. finding lot of problems due to the chinese doctors unability to communicate with us due to the language barrier. so somebody please advice the best course of action.

    thank you.

    • ANSWER:
An acute onset of esotropia in an 8 year old could be a lot of things.

It would seem 'rare' that at 8 years of age she'd suddenly have an accomodative esotropia. It could be that she's been 'dealing' with it for 8 years and finally has decompensated as the eye has reached it's 'adult' size.

Other causes would be a weakness in one of the extraocular muscles either from muscle disease or a neurological problem (which is why the MRI of her head). If she has a weakness of a nerve, she'll move her head into the action of the weak muscle to avoid double vision. For instance, if her right lateral rectus muscle which moves the right eye to the right side, is weak, she'd turn her head or turn her face to the right and look at you sort of out of the left edge of her right and left eyes. There are head turns, head tilts, face turns, tilts, etc. which identfy which nerve is involved. If it's a combination of muscles,.....makes it a bit more difficult.

Has she had any flu lately? Has she had an ear infection lately? Has she had any sinus problems? Any upper respiratory tract problems as in a cold or influenza? Is her thyroid ok? Does she have any other symptoms? Is her gait ok. Is her coordination ok? Is her speech ok? Is she behaving "normally"? Besides the stess of moving to a different country etc., is she acting like the other kids? Is she sleeping normally? Eating normally? Playing normally? Does she 'favor' a side?

Let us know what the scans show. If she has any electodiagnostic testing, you might let me in on those results.

  45. QUESTION:
Eye surgeon or a Plastic/cosmetic surgeon?
I have an eyelid ptosis problem and i was advised eyelid ptosis surgery. can any one tell me who will conduct this surgery an eye surgeon or a plastic/cosmetic surgeon.

    • ANSWER:
This should be done by a board certified Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon. It is not a problem with the eyeball itself but with the lid so reconstruction is the process required.

Do not use a cosmetic surgeon as they only have to qualify as a doctor and do a diploma course. A board certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon has had to jump through all the hoops.

  48. QUESTION:
Im looking for an eye surgeon in NY?
My boyfriend is blind because of acute glaucoma and complications from diabetes, we're looking for some names of doctors that may be able to help, or at least give us some answers.

    • ANSWER:
      NY City? State?
Here's a physician referral directory. For areas of NY served by NewYork-Presbyterian hospitals. Just enter, put in your specialty and zip and it pull sup all those doctors in your area along with a profile that lists their specialties , insurance accepted etc. Pretty thorough. As far as a recommendation, that's a little tougher. You could call the local Lion's club or local diabetes support groups and see if there are any meetings where you could find folks who've actually used certain doctors.
Diabetes is tough and affects us in our weakest areas.
My best nutritional advice would be to check our green powders and supplements like chlorella and blue-green algae, usually in a powder or tablet form. Green suppleemnts are loaded with a lot of the nutrients diabetics lack and are great anti-oxidants. That and fish oil.
I wish him well. Good luck.
