      You would have to have a consultation. It is not just as simple as just measuring your prescription. During laser surgery the surgeon slices a layer off the front of your cornea (in very simple terms) so, the thickness of your cornea is a huge factor.

      ie. you could have a very thin cornea but only have a small prescription and be unsuitable for surgery or you could have a higher prescription and be suitable because your cornea is thick.

      I feel the answer will be no because your true prescription will be stronger than your contact lens prescription and over a -9 is really pushing it but you'll never know unless you see some surgeons. It is cosmetic surgery so treat it like that, See several surgeons and get several opinions, don't opt for the cheapest, opt for the one with best results and recommendations. There are other types of refractive surgery for example cataract surgery (without actually having a cataract!) so there may be an option for you :)

      Contacts lenses worn exactly like instructed are probably safer than LASIK. However many people don't follow instructions exactly. They sleep in them when they should not. They don't replace them as often as they should. In these situations, LASIK is probably safer.

      Usually contacts and glasses are the best bet. Some eye docs have other procedures too. Go talk to ur local eye doctor to check out ur options. Good luck!!!!

      You should not be having LASIK if your eyes have not stabilized. Before you have LASIK, you should have a cycloplegic refraction. This eliminates inappropriate accommodation from your prescription and may even result in them changing your eyes less than 5.0D. You do not want to need a prescription of +0.50 when you are over 35. Immediately after your LASIK, you may be just a little over corrected because it tends to regress a little over the first few months after your procedure.

    Can I get laser eye surgery if I have lenticular astigmatism in my eyes?
    I have a small prescription of -1.75 in both of my eyes and I have astigmatism in both as well. However, in my left eye I have lenticular astigmatism instead of regular astigmatism. As a result, contact lenses are hard to fit because of the lack of soft front surface toric lenses available. My question is, with my eyes am I still able to have laser eye surgery done (Lasik, PRK, etc.)? Thanks

      It always seem like a less than elegant solution to take care of the astigmatism in your lens by giving you astigmatism in your cornea, but it is possible. If you ever have cataract surgery, it may come back to bite you. I don't think it really matters whether your astigmatism is in your lens or cornea for most modern soft toric lenses.

      Your vision could go either way, really good or really bad. Majority of patients get really good vision.

      My psychology professor got lasik and he was told that he could fly an airplane. And he's in his 50's.

    can you change the colour of your eyes when you go to have laser correction surgery?
    I want to get my eyes corrected with Laser eye surgery and wanted to know as ive been told from a previous visit i made that due to my eyes having a Stigmatism they would need to place a Lens in my eye. If that is the case can they then change the colour of the Lens too?

    • ANSWER:
      Sometimes when people have a very high astigmatism ( -2.50 or higher) they will be unable to correct it with a normal laser.

      What they usually do is a lens implant, phakic lens or basically a cataract operation. They will usually do one at a time and is a very simple and effective procedure. It is done where your lens is which is behind the pupil and behind the iris, the coloured part of your eye. This means that will have no effect to the colour of your eye at all. There are a few surgeons around the world trialling dyes which can change the colour of the eye but none are approved yet.

    I had laser eye surgery on friday, should I take any extra precautions in africa next week? Im going to Tanzania.

      When I had my eye surgery, my eyes were really dry for a couple of weeks. That may be hard on the airplane trip, so remember to bring eye drops.
      I think that is about it. Be careful if you go under any water. Wear sunglasses and have fun!

      I had laser eye surgery in Niagara Falls Canada, and I paid 00(canadian) per eye. The thing with laser eye surgery you will find clinics that offer quotes as low as 9 per eye. Sometimes you have to watch that price because it is the bait and switch to get you into the office. I'm not saying that you may not be but that price is usually for low prescriptions,thick corneas and small pupils. You want to go where the technology is current and the surgeon is very experienced and the medical staff to support both. I know the London Vision Clinic is outstanding and they go over and above for their patients. Dr. Dan Reinstein is outstanding and I believe he charges about ,200 pounds. If you ever come to Canada please come to Lasik Provision. Dr. Andrew Taylor is amazing and he truly cares about his patients. He goes the extra mile.

    How successful is Laser Eyes Surgery?
    I've used both eye glasses and contacts but im looking to rid myself of both. glasses are anoying and contacts irritate my eyes. Is laser surgery safe?

    • ANSWER:
      I have several friends and relatives who have had it done and they have all said they were glad they did. I think in the early days there were some problems but it's pretty safe now.
      Two things though.
      1. If your vision is still changing a lot they may not want to do the surgery because you would just need glasses again in a couple of years. That's why I can't get mine done.
      2. If you're getting laser surgery for short sightedness, sometimes they can make your distance vision really good but then you need reading glasses. If you're pretty young this probably isn't an issue but it's something to consider.

      um of course it improves your vision. if it didn't people wouldn't be spending a lot of money to have it done.
      my sister used to need glasses/contacts. she had lasik 3 years ago now and her vision is 20/20 (perfect vision) and no need for glasses any more.

    I want either contacts or get eye lasik, but I have a fear of anything touching my eyes. And with lasik I hear they use a blade to slice a flab & peel it back.

    • ANSWER:
      As with all laser procedures, they give you an anesthetic for your eyes so you won't feel a thing.

      Contacts aren't painful but may be a bit uncomfortable at first. Since you are afraid of touching your eyes, it seems that your problem would be putting contacts in and taking them out, but don't worry, within a few weeks you can easily master it. Once you actually have the contacts in your eyes you shouldn't have any problems with it.

    Can you Be Security Forces in the USAF and have your eyes Laser corrected?
    I'm thinking about joining the AF after collage and I know you can't have your eyes laser corrected if you are a pilot but what about security forces?

      You can join with laser eye surgery however it has to be a certain kind, and had to be done at a certain time and you will have to get a waiver for it. Best bet is if you havnt had it done yet to wait till you are in and get the military to do it for you. SF is one of the jobs that has priority over other AFSCs to get prk.

    Do you think people who undergo laser eye surgery have really weird looking eyes?
    I know a handful of people who've had the surgery and I swear I could tell without even knowing! Their eyes look weird and bulgy and their lids look droopy, is there a reason for this or am I just imagining it?

      I had ptosis of the eyelids and my eyelids covered half my pupils. I had the surgery and yes my eyes did look different. My son said I looked scared. He had seen me for the past 39 yrs peeking thru my eyelids. I can now wear eye makeup and who cares what people think. I can see and that is what matters. I fully recommend the surgery for the sake of sight.Since learning to use eye makeup correctly I have improved on my technique and my eyes actually look so much better.

      There is no effective topical products to improve the look of blood vessels other than laser treatments that are expensive.

      1. you are normal dear! most ppl suffer the same..( -.5 every yr or more)..so dnt worry..

      2. go and ask ur doc. he is the only one who can decide that.

      3. mine is -1..im not wearing glasses all the time.. my bro is -5..my sister in law is -8! she is fine ..she wears glasses or contacts..

    Does laser eye surgery work for any eyes no matter how bad the vision? [Except blindness]?
    I have really bad vision and I want to fix my eyes...Really its not that I don't like wearing glasses, but I love to play sports so my glasses are like a curse. I don't want contacts because I'm scared they might get lost. Any tips about keeping my vision from decreasing at the moment?

    • ANSWER:
      Because LASIK involves removing part of the cornea, my understanding is that the extremely high corrections would require too much removal and leave the cornea thinner than desirable.

      Soft contacts, while playing sports, is a good option for many people. While it's true that the hard contacts can fly out of your eye pretty easily in contact sports, it's also true that soft contacts rarely do. They are pretty good at staying in for almost everyone.

      Rigid contacts may help your Rx stabilize (not increase need for correction) or may help "mold" your cornea so you can reduce your dependence on corrective lenses.

      I'm sure your eye care professional would be happy to discuss these options with you, and will be able to provide you with more personalized choices.

    Can watching a video of a laser damage your eyes?
    So on YouTube there is a video of a man filming a laser keyboard. He continually shines the laser into the camera, which I cannot avoid when watching the video. I understand that staring at actual lasers can damage your eyes, but can watching video of a laser being shined directly into the camera damage your eyes?

      No. The mechanism in lasers that make them hazardous to our eyes is the amount of energy the beam carries. if you're there in person, and the guy shines the laser in your eye, it will give your retina a bit of a beating. But when you watch a laser on tv or your computer, you're just watching your monitor's representation of the laser. Same with looking directly at the sun on a tv show. So feel free to keep watching. :)

    Can my eyes be damaged from indirect laser light?
    I have a 30mW and 20mW laser. Can my eyes be damaged if i'm shining the light on a white carpet? Can it reflect the IR? The laser isn't powerful enough to popup a balloon with black sharpie, so...

      I can recommend Ultralase in Birmingham. That is where I had my eyes done about 3/4 years ago now. It really was the best thing, absoutely amazing being able to see so clearly without contacts or glasses and I, like yourself, had stigmatisms. I think now the procedure has changed since I had it done, but if you make an appointment, they will assess you and then take it from there. Goodluck.

    Are infrared emissions from a 5mW laser dangerous to eyes?
    The cheap laser is from china and it does not have an IR filter, so will it kill my eye cells? At night, will the laser reflections from dust damage my eyes when doing a little astronomy?

      If it's a 5mW laser, it meets the FDA's regulations and most likely will not damage your eyes. However, this does not mean you should not point the laser at your eyes.

    Can I have eye laser surgery with Blephoraspasm and dry eyes?
    The muscles around my eyes twitch really fast. I have injections into the muscles every 3 months to help with this. I also have really dry eyes too. Additionally, I have congenital ptosis and photophobia.

      No, sorry.

      It really would not be advised. Laser eye treatment can make your eyes dryer. If you already have a dry eye problem, then this will be worse after surgery.

      Your eye also needs to be very steady during treatment. Although all lasers have trackers to follow your eye, the surgeon does not and will find it very difficult to do the procedure.

      No reputable surgeon should do the treatment on someone with these onoing issues.

    The instructions say to turn over the mouse and press a button on the bottom to establish a connection. Could the green laser hurt your eyes? It says it is class 1M.

      not if you just glance at it or something. Not very powerful.

      I had laser eye surgery about three years ago. For about 3 months after the surgery, my eyes would get dry pretty fast. Afterward my eyes have been normal. Honestly, I totally forgot about it until I read your question because it seems like so long ago.

    Can a high myopic astigmatism patient have surface ablation laser eye correction down twice to treat his eyes?

      Every patient is different. It is possible that he could, but it is also possible that enough of the cornea will have been removed in the first surgery that it cannot be done again.

      He will need to check with his doctor to determine the correct answer for his specific situation.

      I have had the surgery and also work for the surgeon. The main thing that will give you comfort is finding a respected surgeon that you can get word of mouth referrals on. It is best to know a few people that have had surgery with him or ask the surgeon if he has patient testimonials.

      After finding an excellent surgeon, you should have a thorough eye exam to determine if you are a proper candidate and if you would benefit from having the LASIK surgery. The staff should be able to answer any questions you have. As with any procedure there are risks and benefits, but most post operative patients would say the BENEFITS greatly outweighed any of the risk.
      Most important make sure you feel comfortable and informed before making any decisions to proceed with surgery.

      Eggs are another good reason to question evolution.
      The chicken would have to be created with a system for delivering eggs intact already.
      A process of laying eggs is so complex that it would take many mutations. But those mutations are of no use until the whole procedure actually works. That defies natural selection.

  35. QUESTION:
    Can a class 3B laser pointer damage my eyes?
    I recently aquired a class 3b laser pointer from ebay. It runs at 1mw, and so I believe it is a very weak laser. I read online that class 3B lasers can cause instant damage to your eyes, yet it was talking about 3B lasers up to the power of 500mw (500 times the power of mine). Can anyone help me out here and tell me if there is any risk with even momentary, direct exposure to the eye from the laser?

    • ANSWER:
      If your laser is a visible laser at 1 mW, it is not a class 3B laser. That would be a class 2 laser. However, the class is more important than the power. The class will take into account the wavelength as well. You should treat all class 3B lasers as if they can damage your eye instantly.

      It sounds like either you do not know the power of your laser or you are misreading the laser class. For example, if your laser is green, there is a good chance that is is a doubled IR laser, and IR lasers are more dangerous than visible lasers of the same power (because you can't see them and your blink reflex does not respond to invisible lasers).

      On a side note, class 2 lasers (even 1 mW visible lasers) can damage vision and count on your blink reflex to provide protection.

      My recommendation is to pay more attention to the class of your laser than the power of your laser. If you are a laser expert, you can more easily identify the dangers of your particular laser.

      A friend of mine has been operated with the laser. She still has many problems with her eyes.
      She must always use the eye drops.

      Hi, Keloids can form anywhere on the body where there is an abrasion They can be the result of pimples, insect bites, scratching, burns, or other skin trauma. Keloid scars can develop after surgery. They are more common in some sites such as central chest, the back and shoulders and the ear lobes. They can also occur on body piercings.

      So yes, laser resurfacing or surgery around the eyes might cause keloids if you have the genetic predisposition.

    How old should I be to get laser surgery on my eyes?
    Right now I am only 13 and my eyes are getting worse and worse. My dad told me we could think and research about laser surgery, but how old is a good age?

    • ANSWER:
      You need to be old enought that your vision has stabilized (not changing any more). Typically, this is about 20 or so. The problem with doing the laser surgery too soon, is that if your vision gets worse afterwards, you will have to go get glasses again! This would really suck as you would have paid 2 or 3 grand to not have to wear glasses! Usually, they can fix it again, but it is far better to wait and only have to do it once. Generally, they won't even do the procedure unless your vision hasn't changed for about 2 years or so. Also, not everybody is a good candidate for the procedure.

    • ANSWER:
      I'm not certain about Turkey, but in the UK the high-end clinics charge around 3,000+ GBP. Not cheap, but personally I wouldn't skimp on something involving my eyes. The London Vision Clinic is one of the more expensive options around but they go to great lengths to justify their prices.

      If the laser beam is from some type of toy, the laser beam is not strong enough to harm anyone's eyes. Most laser beams used on humans as part of a treatment or diagnostic test will not harm their eyes. When the doctor tells you to close your eyes or do not look at the beam, it is a precautionary measure. This does not mean that you should shine that beam at your brother again or not follow a doctor's orders.

      Light carries energy and when absorbed, it heats up the thing that absorbs it. So the brighter the light, the more energy is transmitted and the hotter something that is being illuminated becomes. If the light is bright enough, the object will get very hot. Lasers have a lot of power compared to a light bulb, and when they enter the eye, the lens focuses the light onto a tiny spot on your retina, so there is even more power per area. This can make the retina hot enough to damage it, just as if you were to put a hot iron on the inside of your eye. And if the retina gets damaged, you will lose vision temporarily or permanently depending on how severe the damage is. For most laser pointers, there is not enough energy to instantly damage the eye, and your reflexes will cause you to blink before you have damage. But if you don't blink, or if the laser is more powerful, you will get damage. And of course it works on animals. (Please don't do this!)

      What I have said above is true of visible lasers. There are infrared lasers (IR lasers) that do basically the same thing, but the light from those lasers is not visible to you, so you don't notice that your eye is being damaged until the damage is done. There are also ultraviolet (UV) lasers. UV light does not penetrate into your eye, but instead it gets absorbed by the lens of your eye. So instead of burning a spot in the conrea, it burns a spot in the lens of the eye. UV light also causes chemical reactions that can color the lens of your eye and make it non-transparent to visible light, so you lose you vision due to that.

      UV lasers are not common outside of physics or science labs. IR lasers are used in CD and DVD players, but otherwise are also not common outside of labs.

      There are many types of lasers. To name a few: diode lasers (used in laser pointers and consumer electronics), dye laser (only used in science labs), crystal lasers (ruby, Ti:Saphire, etc, use in labs), gas lasers (He:Ne, etc, used in labs), and a whole lot more. Excimer and CO2 lasers are the most common ones used to cut through things, but all lasers, if powerful enough and focused down to a small spot, can cut through stuff.

      The laser light of the mouse is so weak that even if you look at it for years, it won't damage your eyes.

      No. It can make you have some little issues, but lasers for general public use are pretty harmless.

      The internet is an interesting place. Anyone can say anything about anything. You will find some sites that will lead you to believe that LASIK is the work of satan. You will find other sites that will tell you it's the best thing since sliced bread. Don't spend to much time listening to people that really have a hidden agenda. Find a well respected eye doctor who works in the area of LASIK and go in and ask him all your questions.
