Laser Operation

As they reach their fifties and beyond, one in three men will develop a condition known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or an enlarged prostate.

This very common condition can have a terrible impact on quality of life. Men experience difficulties passing urine, often having to get up several times a night. More rarely if left untreated, the condition can cause damage to kidneys.

A normal prostate is approximately the size of a walnut. But the prostate is the only organ in the body which continues to grow throughout the lifespan and excess tissue will cause problems by blocking the normal flow of urine.

Like other medical conditions, many men put up with the symptoms for months and even years. They are often embarrassed about the problem and reluctant to seek help. In fact it’s quite often that the wives or partners push them forward to seek medical advice.

Some have fears about the dreaded ‘the prostate operation’ which their father or older friends may have had, resulting in several days in hospital, considerable discomfort and surgical side effects which require a long period of convalescence.

Known as TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate), the traditional treatment for an enlarged prostate is an operation which involves cutting away the surplus prostate tissue using a telescope. Rarely, if the prostate is grossly enlarged, an open removal operation is performed via an abdominal incision. This will require even longer recovery time to get back to normal physical activity.

Now there is a superior treatment which has many benefits for patients.

Green Light Laser Treatment involves vaporising the surplus prostate tissue using a high powered laser.

The concentration of power from the laser is so powerful that it is rapidly absorbed into the prostate tissue. Blood vessels in the target area are also vaporised, so there is very little blood loss.

The laser is delivered through a thin fibre guided into the target area via a smaller and less traumatic telescope. It is a very safe, precise and non-invasive way of targeting surplus tissue.

The whole procedure usually takes just 60 to 90 minutes and patients normally return home within 24 hours.

We know the importance of this rapid recovery period. Many men with enlarged prostates have active and busy lives and do not want an operation which leaves them unable to resume normal activities for months.

Green Light Laser Therapy is now the treatment of choice for the enlarged prostate in America and rapidly replacing the conventional TURP operations.

The first Green Light Laser operation was performed in the UK in October 2002
And the procedure received approval from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in 2005.

Yet it is currently only available in a relatively small number of hospitals across the UK.

Together with my colleagues, Consultant Urologists Christopher Luscombe and Anurag Golash, we have established The Prostate Laser Centre Staffordshire and Cheshire to offer this new procedure to patients.

Based at The Nuffield Hospital, North Staffordshire in Newcastle-under-Lyme, The Prostate Laser Centre provide rapid access to Green Light Laser treatment in a dedicated, specialist centre.

I had swellings in my nose four years ago and had to be operated which was done by laser operation in a hospital. I have visited several Nose Doctors and tried several nose drops and creams without success. I am in a very embarrassing situation and do not know what to do now. Please help me. I will be very, very thankful.

Only you can smell it. So don't be embarrassed, just get used to it. You'll be one of a very few people whose noses can smell in more ways than one.

There's a lady in San Diego whose ears make little noises. I'll email you her address, and you and she can get together and talk about topics that relate to: noses that stink and ears that squeak.

  5. QUESTION:
How safe is LASIK laser operation?
My number is -2 and I wanted to undergo LASIK laser operation but I have little doubt, why didn't laser surgeon himself try this thing. They wear spectacles why?

    • ANSWER:
LASIK eye surgery is generally considered to be a safe and effective method of treating near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism and millions of people undergo this procedure every year throughout the world.
No surgery is without risks or complications, however, and this must be understood and accepted before making the decision.
The most common side effects of LASIK eye surgery are dry eyes and glare. The incidence of these are debated between proponents and opponents of the surgery. The FDA considers the risks to be low enough to approve the technology required for LASIK (microkeratomes, excimer lasers, etc.)
Safety can be increased by selecting a skilled surgeon using the best technology. Studies show that experience is one of the most important factors in selecting a surgeon.

How much time it will take for operation and how long i should close my eyes???
How much it will cost ????

    • ANSWER:
      Hello,
I am 25 yrs old, and just 2 Years back I had undergone Lazec Surgery.. or so called Laser Operation.

I had -3.5 and -3.2 Numbers in Either Eyes and now Both of them are GONE.. I can see without Specks .. AMAZING EXPERIENCE... I HIGHLY SUGGEST GO AND JUST DO IT DUDE. :D

But Read below Carefully. . Nothing to worry .. just some Hints

      1) Check the Cost of the operation at various places, because some charge 25,000 RS for both eyes and some Charge 8 Lacks and above for Single Eye.. . Yes it dose depend on Equipment and Service they provide and Brand Name and Locations of the Clinic/Hospital.

      2) Operation Demands the following things
      - Some Prescribed eye drops and medicine to be taken, Prior to the surgery for 2 days
      - Must Wear Dark Black Specks/Goggles Zero Number, after the Operation for Least a Month or untill u get comfortable, because its like having new set of Amazing Eyes, and u are learning to use :D
      - Don't Use Perfumes, Scents, Eye Decoration or Head Oils, or Dont BATH from the HEAD for least 7 days after the Operation.
      - Dont Touch the Eyes, for a Month and NEVER RUB THEM, After the Operation..
      - Eyes to be Covered while Sleeping with special Pouches provided by Doctors for least 15 - 20 Days.

      Personal Experience. .
The Operation has 100% Success RATE. . It all depends on your Courage to Face a Light coming towards ur face, on the Operation Table.. If u move your eyes, more chances of problem or it wont work to full extent.

Eye operation laser, barely takes even 2 minutes. It just depends on how much u get COMFORTABLE WITH, Because they make u sleep on a table, make ur eyes wide open. Point Many Many Lights at you.. and u cant Blink, because its held by Forks.. .. and u are not supposed to move ur eyes..
This is where u have to keep ur Eye still/Not Move for ONLY 2 Minutes.. which is LITTLE Difficult.. (Actually the Hardest part :P )

If u move, the whole process starts again, and again 2 minutes, which makes it harder..

I highly Suggest, Forget everything, And think of wonderful memories during this stage of the Operation, its just 2 minutes.. or less if u just calm down Ur eyes..

      Personal Experience :
I used to wear specks for past 14 years, and now it FEELS AMAZING not having them.. Not searching for fu.cking specks after waking up in the morning.. I feel a whole new Beautiful world.. its actually Beautiful..

For more information, u can Mail me.

      Regards,
      Best of Luck.

  12. QUESTION:
Can you have a laser operation for your eyes if you have catarata ?
My right eye is almost totally blurred due to catarata. Does my being Diabetic have anything to do with it ?

    • ANSWER:
Laser surgery wouldn't correct the vision where the problem is being caused by a cataract.

Cataract surgery has to be done first, which will usually correct the vision on it's own.

To what extent diabetes is affecting your eyes is something only your Dr's would know.

  13. QUESTION:
I am 25 years. i am planning to undergo laser operation for my eyess, is it fruitful?

Secondly, even if i get 6/9 vision by this operation, will it be able to get 6/6 thru glasses.

  14. QUESTION:
Does laser operation work for severe myopia?
A child of 5 yrs is severely myopic, and wears glasses of 10.5,11 power for the last six months. It was diagnosed that her eyeball size is larger than normal. Doctors say that once she is 18+, she can go in for corrective surgery.Till then , her myopia is going to get more severe with each passing year.Nothing we can do in terms of diet and exercise can help her .
Has anyone with similar symptoms got surgery done and benefitted? Also, is there anything I can do now to improve her vision and ensure that the number does not increase every year? .

    • ANSWER:
There's very little special you should be doing. This sort of myopia is essentially genetic in origin.

She should be encouraged to keep as long a working distance for closework as is feasible, rather than jam her nose right into picturebooks and computer screens and the TV. And to take breaks from closework, to re-establish distance focus.
But that's good advice for *all* children.

Other things will depend on her eyes:
You can enquire concerning at what age her doctor considers contact lenses will be a possibility.
And whether, if the Rx rises steadily (which is, I'm afraid the likely thing), using older, weaker, glasses for closework might be a useful policy.

When the eyes have finished growing, she is likely to be outside the range for laser refractive surgery, at least with currrent techniques, but there are other options including
"Insertable contact lenses" (Anterior chamber implants) to deal with refractive errors with high numbers.

  15. QUESTION:
The condition of high pumping, limits the operation of a three level laser to pulsed operation. Why is continu?
The condition of high pumping, limits the operation of a three level laser to pulsed operation. Why is continuous operation impossible in a three level laser?

    • ANSWER:
You have to get the majority of atoms to get out of the excited state to have an inversion.

Once that inversion happens then the system can lase.

Lasing returns atoms to ground state and you have to pump them up again.

  16. QUESTION:
i have had my laser operation done for my eyes and now i dont wear spectacles so can i apply for officer?
i am a graduate working with a multinational company dell computers...i want to join territorial army as an officer.

    • ANSWER:
Which Country are you in Varun? Because different countries have different norms for vision correction.
If you are in India, the minimum vision requirement for Armed forces is 6/12 (20/40)or better (with or without glasses) in GOOD eye. It also depends on what kind of job you want to be in. If your job requires a good depth perception then you might have to have no worse than 6/24 (20/80) in BAD eye along with 20/40 in GOOD eye.
If you are in Canada, I guess you need to have good vision along with good field of vision. As far as I know in Ontario Aeronautics act have similar norms and standards as Armed forces:
1- Ocular adnexa should be normal,
2- there should be no active pathological condition, acute or chronic, of either eye which is likely to interfere with its proper function to an extent that would jeopardize safety not of the person but also others.
3- Reporting of any refractive surgery is mandatory because people who have RK (special type of refractive surgery) done on their eyes tend to get complications later on during their lives.

For more details you must contact the local authority or office.

But I think h/o LASER should not create any problem for you as far as your V/A ( corrected) is GOOD.

  20. QUESTION:
Does one have to undergo an laser operation in order to become a airline pilot ?

    • ANSWER:
Be very careful with Lasik surgery, Radial K or any other form of eye surgery – it can be disqualifying for a medical certificate. Only recently has the FAA approved such use with strict guidelines of which your doctor needs to document the procedure. Not remember this is not like documenting a normal patient, but like a Flight Surgeon documenting a pilot – every "I" must be dotted and every "T" crossed.

      http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/medical_certification/faq/response12/

The procedure is disqualification for the US Air Force and Navy.

You do not need to have the procedure for a license or medical but an airline may require it if you are young. As you know most older pilots need glasses in some form (usually for near vision) but most airlines (in my day) required 20/20 near and far vision to be hired. That was just the way it was and some airlines are still that way. Good luck.

  26. QUESTION:
how long does the hemorrhoid laser treatment operation take?
how long does a person stay under while having the hemorrhoid laser surgery?

    • ANSWER:
You shouldn't have to "go under" for hemorrhoid treatments; or should I say that should be your LAST option. I've had three experiences with major roids, this was the outcome.
First - lanced = Not a good experience at all, VERY painful
Second - Bands, not painful but you still loose all aspects of self respect on all fours, but it did work for "THOSE roids)
Last, "butt" not least and most important, I had one more episode. The Dr. told me that one in 3 people suffer from this, it's due to our diet. I asked for more bands and he said no, I was to young and it could cause later scar tissue which wasn't good. He told me to do the Metamucil thing, (fiber in water) and I just knew I wasn't going to follow through with that, so I went to Walmart and got their generic fiber pills, the directions say one thing, I really never looked at them, only for the first week I took two, twice a day, after that I take two per day every day, they are cheap, they work and I've not had a problem in 5 years. My suggestion before you spend all your money on co-pay's and insurance, etc, try what I'm saying. the only snag would be if you have developed blood clots, then I'd get the bands, takes about 5 minutes and that's it; it's like castrating a bull with rubberbands. I have every bit of experience in this matter, try the fiber before you opt for surgery, cheaper, longer lasting and easy. No need for the name brand, Generic pills work just fine.

  27. QUESTION:
I want to do laser eye operation to remove spectacles if there is any disadvantages, where i can do in chennai?
with minimum cost and good treatment, now iam 38 years old from tamilnadu india.

    • ANSWER:
Keep in mind that, at age 38, you will need reading glasses within a few years at most, so you will be paying a lot of money to not have to wear glasses for distance, but you will find that, quite soon, you will once again need to wear glasses (for reading). Seems like a waste of money to me, unless there are other importants reasons for doing this you are not saying.

  30. QUESTION:
Why are at least 3 quantum levels required for laser operation?

    • ANSWER:
Because in case of 2 level laser Lower lasing level merge with the Ground state and upper lasing level(metastable state) merge with the normal exited state(Pumping level). For the laser action to take place effectively upper lasing level(metastable state) should be as narrow as possible. For efficient pumping to take place pumping band should be as wide as possible. As the same state in this case can't show both the features,so 2 level laser is not possible.

  32. QUESTION:
Laser operation for glasses removal safe?
i have glasses for 7 years.my number is -1.00 both eyes.
now i want 2 get rid of them.is the laser technique safe as i had read it somewhere that it has aftereffects and cause blindess in old age.

    • ANSWER:
I wore contact lenses for 31 1/2 years and tri-focal glasses for 10 years. My vision was 20/1000!!!!! I had lasik surgery last September and found it to be a miracle!!!! My vision is 20/25 and I can read things I was not able to read since I was a small child! There are NO aftereffects whatsoever. This procedure does not last a lifetime, and will necessitate further procedures (depending on the original-blade or bladeless surgery) and maybe that is where the silliness of causing blindness in old age comes from. I would SERIOUSLY consider a consultation. They are usually free and will answer all of the questions YOU have. In the long run, it is a small price to pay for sight!

I thought the laser surgery was to correct your vision problem.
      Your not explaining this right.

  36. QUESTION:
How does laser operation cure eye sight problems? Is it trustworthy?

    • ANSWER:
I've been looking into this as well. From what I can tell, the more expensive it is, the higher the chance that your eyes won't be messed up because of it. The ones that advertise on tv and newspapers for cheap should not be trusted. If they get sued, they can just pack up and set up another practice somewhere else under a different name. Also, one of the main reasons why people's eye sight tend to screw up after the surgery is because they don't follow the directions of the medications afterwards to the last detail.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question on the how part.

  37. QUESTION:
I am thinking of a Varicose Vein Laser Removal operation, I live in Boston MA, any ideas how much will it be?
I have 2-3 veins not too serious. I don't have any pain at all but just not comfortable with the looks.

    • ANSWER:
I am in the process of having this done. The doctor had me have an ultrasound to determine the medical necessity of the procedure. If there are leak valves, the insurance will cover the procedure because it would be considered a medical necessity. One of my legs does fall under that; however, my other leg with the spider veins is an out of pocket expense. The procedure (which is injections) doctor said I would need 4 sessions for this and if I paid ahead, I would save /per session. It ended up costing me 00.00. It is done on a 4 week interval. The varicose vein procedure (which is covered by insurance) uses a laser procedure.
I haven't had anything done yet; but I do know with both procedures you have to wear the compression hose for a bit. It's not a procedure where you should expect instananeous results. From what I was told it may look worse before the healing. But, after years of not being able to wear shorts or street lenght skirts/dresses, I am more than willing to go thru the procedures. From my understanding, there is no pain and you can walk out of the office afterwards.

  38. QUESTION:

What are the chances? May I lose my sight? What are the side-effects?
What are the chances? Could I lose my sight? What are the side-effects?

    • ANSWER:
LASIK laser eye surgery has many benefits, including:

It works! It corrects vision. Around 80% of patients will have their desired vision after LASIK laser eye surgery. An enhancement can further increase this number.
LASIK laser eye surgery is associated with very little pain.
Vision is corrected nearly immediately or by the next day after LASIK laser eye surgery.
Recovery is quick and usually no bandages or stitches are required after LASIK laser eye surgery.
Adjustments can be made years after LASIK laser eye surgery to further correct vision.
After having LASIK laser eye surgery, most patients no longer need corrective eyewear.
What Are the Disadvantages of LASIK Laser Eye Surgery?
Despite the pluses, there are some disadvantages:

Changes made to the cornea cannot be reversed after LASIK laser eye surgery.
Corrections can only be made by additional LASIK laser eye surgeries.
LASIK laser eye surgery is expensive, typically costing ,200 to ,250 per eye; though compared to the cost of glasses and contact lenses, the price is reasonable.
LASIK laser eye surgery is technically complex. Problems may occur when the doctor cuts the flap, which can permanently affect vision.
LASIK laser eye surgery can cause a loss of "best" vision with or without glasses at 1 year after surgery. Your best vision is the highest degree of vision that you achieved while wearing your contacts or eyeglasses.
What Are the Potential Side Effects of LASIK Laser Eye Surgery?
Some patients experience discomfort in the first 24-48 hours after surgery. Other side effects, although rare, may include:

      Glare
      Seeing halos around images
      Difficulty driving at night
      Fluctuating vision
      Dry eyes

The FDA has found no long-term side effects from LASIK laser eye surgery.

Healing after LASIK laser eye surgery usually occurs very rapidly. Most patients notice improved vision within a few days after LASIK laser eye surgery. However, your vision may be blurry and hazy for the first day. You should plan to have someone drive you home after LASIK laser eye surgery.

Your eyes will be dry even though they do not feel that way. Your doctor will give you prescription eye drops to prevent infection and keep your eyes moist. These eye drops may cause a momentary slight burn or blurring of your vision when you use them. Do not use any eye drops not approved by your ophthalmologist. Specific follow-up after the surgery varies from one surgeon to another. You will revisit the doctor for an evaluation 24-48 hours after LASIK laser eye surgery, as well as at regular intervals within the first six months after surgery.

  43. QUESTION:
I opted laser operation for eyes 3 yrs ago.I feel my eyes are weak.Is it normal to get these operated again?

    • ANSWER:
From what I have been told about this surgery, it works best with people whose eyes have stopped changing. If you still needed new glasses every couple of years when you had the surgery, then your eyes would continue to change at the same rate. So it is quite possible your vision might not be quite as good now as it was immediately after the surgery.

  45. QUESTION:
EYE correction - laser operation before/after baby?
I am 23, want a baby around 28. I cannot decide if I should have a laser eye operation after it b/c someone told me the pressure in the eye is very high in the pregnancy...
    I don't know, do you? I wear contacts since I was 12...
I also wondered if eyes get worse a bit after pregnancy?

    • ANSWER:
Ok, some woman have high intraocular pressure if they have preclamsia.

Nothing to do with PRK or LASIK. During the post care for any of these surgeries, you will be on steroid drops; these increase your intraocular pressure too. You can get surgery before or after having a baby...after though, you would have to wait until after you are done breastfeeding or if you don't choose to breastfeed, until 6 months after giving birth. This is becuase while you're pregnant, your body retains fluid; your cornea also retains water. 6 months after birth, your body should be back to normal.

  46. QUESTION:
Is there anyway to cure eye floaters? Other than operation and laser surgery.?
I've had eye floaters for almost a year now, I didn't go to a Doctor yet or anything, but they are ruining my life, so will someone please tell me if there is a cure or anything to make them better.

    • ANSWER:
Most of us want to avoid dangerous surgeries at all costs. There is no real way, as of yet, to cure one's eyes from floaters completely. However, the eye natural healing process is much more powerful than some people want to believe.

Floaters may cause depression, anxiety and many other related problems. Some want to get rid of them by surgery, without analyzing the numerous alternatives. In this article, we are going to focus in the best and safest cure for floaters. Please note that if your eyes are in pain or you suddenly experience flashes of light, you must contact a doctor immediately. This page is meant for those whose floaters are only annoying and painless.

Now let's begin. What's the safest cure for floaters? Getting used to them. It's true; being bothered by floaters is entirely psychological. However, there are ways to actually decrease the floaters that we can see and, most importantly, stop more floaters from being formed.

First of all, let's have a quick peak at the eye. What are floaters, and where are they formed? The eye has a jelly-like substance that constitutes most of the inner eye. This is contained in the vitreous. It is normal that as the eye ages, the vitreous begins forming "webs" (floaters) which are "cracks" in the vitreous. They range enormously in size and shape, from tiny dots that can be barely seen, to enormous dragon-shaped floaters.

The brain has a natural tendency to ignore everything that we do not need. Furthermore, there is a very strong correlation between the time we have experienced floaters and the actual floaters we see. The longer we've had them, the less we see them. If we add our eye's natural healing process to our brain's superb ignore capacity, it is conspicuous why we gradually stop seeing floaters. The real problem arises when new floaters are formed on a frequent basis.

How to stop floaters from being formed? While there is no real way to stop the formation of floaters (that is confirmed), there are many ways to strengthen one's eyes which will in turn lessen the creation of new floaters and even accelerate the eye's healing process as it has been proven by many doctors and floater-patients such as myself.

      >Before going any further, I want to say something very important: Avoid surgery at all costs. If your eyes are not in pain and you do not see any flashes of light, then please do yourself a favor and never subject yourself to surgery. Even if you do see occasional flashes of light, go see your doctor and don't insist on having surgery. Ask many questions and consult at least two doctors. It's your eyes we are talking about: you only have two and you must take care of them.

Having said that, let's continue. The first, and foremost most important step, is to have a good diet. This is not important: it's imperative. A good diet will not only help your eyes; it will help your heart, brain and just about your whole organism which will in turn help your eyes even more. Never underestimate the power of having a good diet. What constitutes a good diet? Water, vegetables, water and more vegetables. Of course you must add meat from time to time, fruits, bread; but with water and vegetables you are already halfway there. Avoid fast-food at all costs and try to eat fresh vegetables as frequently as possible. Now that we are on the topic, there is one drink that you must consider: red wine. I have heard it from many doctors: a glass of red wine every two nights (or even nightly) is good for the eyes and heart.

Exercise is vital. I know that every doctor and his mother recommend the basic nutrition/exercise combination. It is so important that it's something you should be reminded again and again. That combination will not only help your eyes directly, it will help you lose weight which is a primary factor of vision-loss and even believed to be a direct cause of floaters. Nutrition and exercise will also help your heart - you need a strong heart for your eyes to function properly.

Are your eyes frequently irritated? Then you may need natural eye-drops. I will tell you a bit about a personal experience. My eyes are bigger than normal and when they close, they can't close completely making them frequently irritated, or as some would say, "red". After visiting numerous ophthalmologists they all recommended costly medications that I used: none worked. I visited more ophthalmologists, wasted more money and ultimately gave up and resigned to red eyes. When talking to a good friend of mine, he recommended natural eye-drops. I bought them, used them and within two days my eyes were as clear as water (well, almost!) What can you learn from this? Never underestimate the power of natural medication. It does not have any side effects, and trying them can only make your eyes stronger. If your eyes are even a bit irritated, try natural eye-drops. They are a great relief. Never use them more than two or three times per day.

  48. QUESTION:
    laser operation for less periods?
is the an operation that uses lasers or other forms that involve little or no incissions? please help.
i mean for the uterus or the ovaries like getting the tubes tied but with laser or any other methods.

    • ANSWER:
If your problem is cataract, yes! There is an operation called small incision cataract procedure.

A technique called phacoemulsification is used to remove your cataract. The phacoemulsification technique uses ultrasound to dissolve the cataract allowing a much smaller incision to be made than was possible using previous methods. This enables a quicker recovery of the patient's eyesight. To hasten vision recovery further "no stitch" surgery is utilised.

A very small incision will be placed at the optimal position to improve the visual result of the eye by reducing or eliminating any existing astigmatism at the time of surgery. Then a pair of intra-ocular plastic lens is placed in the natural position of the human lens and restores your vision without the need for thick glasses afterwards. In most cases after the surgery, no eye patch is required - enabling you to start using the eye almost immediately after surgery. It is unlikely that you will experience discomfort.

  50. QUESTION:
for laser operations, without population inversion, can stimulated emission still take place?
if that is possible, then what really is the significance of the population inversion in laser operation? thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Nope. Population inversion means that more atoms are in a high-energy state than in a lower one, unlike the usual situation. In a glass of water for instance, there are more low-energy molecules of H2O than fast-moving ones. Population inversion is a store of energy. When a laser lases, the photons that zap the high-energy atoms cause them to release a photon in phase with the photon that zapped them. Hence the coherent collimated intense beam of photons.
