In the last 10 years LASIK corrective eye surgery has become very widespread. We have now seen super star athletes use LASIK. These stars depend on their eyes to make a living.
People are afraid of the consequences of this type of procedure going bad. As with any surgical procedure, the risks are there. Still many athletes have now had LASIK surgery preformed on their eyes. Let's see how it went.
The biggest name that comes to mind is Tiger Woods. Can't think of anyone bigger. He had LASIK done in 1999 to shed his contacts and improve his vision. He now sees at an impressive 20-15 without his contacts.
For a batter in baseball, the quality of his vision is undeniably critical. Without very good vision it is virtually impossible to hit a baseball at big league standards. Some baseball players have used LASIK, risking their careers if vision was degraded.
Even pitching needs good vision. Greg Maddox had LASIK surgery and turned around a 1-3 start into a 9 out of 10 game winning streak. His vision is 20-15 these days.
Greg feels the win streak and the surgery were pure coincidence. He never felt it would improve his pitching. He wanted to get rid of his glasses, and see better for his off field life.
Many hitters have now had LASIK done. All-star players Jeff Bagwell and Bernie Williams are two that have had the surgery. It's hard to see statistically how it has affected them because they are late in their careers with outstanding stats.
It's when you here these players talk about life after LASIK surgery that you get an idea of how it is for them. Maddox talks about how nice it is to just sit and watch TV now. Bernie Williams feels it is simply a miracle.
Tiger Woods opted for the surgery mainly to not have to wear contacts. He can have trouble playing in contacts whenever his allergies would flare up. LASIK has solved this problem for him.
The other benefit Tiger has observed is everything seems bigger to him now. He feels this especially has helped him read long putts. The sloped are more defined and clear to him.
With so many athletes trusting there livelihoods to this surgery, us normal people can have confidence that it's safe. These guys are risking millions of dollars if things go bad. This operation has improved the quality of life for many. Many people.

QUESTION:
After LASIK operation is dryness of the eye a longterm side effect ?
The dryness experienced is overcome using some type of lubricant/allergen (eg.; Refresh + ) immediately after the operation.
Is this required to be used over a long period ? My daughter has been advised to use it every one hour. Please give precise answer.-
ANSWER:
Cannot give precise answer since everyone is different. Some people have no problems in a few weeks, some forever and have to use stuff like Restaysis the rest of their lives. Some see clearly at night some only see halos.
It is a shame that many Lasik docs care more about money then screening the patients correctly and that more people aren't correctly warned of the problems before

QUESTION:
what is the validity of lasik eye operation?
if a person once had a lasik operation then for how many years he can be free with his vision problems(i.e. wearing a lens or glasses-
ANSWER:
Hi Aravinda - LASIK is a permanent procedure. For the vast majority of patients, one treatment is all they need to correct common refractive errors. However, LASIK will not prevent natural age-related regression within the eye like presbyopia, the common eye condition which requires most people in their 40s – even those who have had LASIK – to start wearing reading glasses. Still, if you have the procedure in your early 20s it’s very possible for you to be able to go about 20 years without requiring any form of corrective lenses.Hope that helps,

QUESTION:
I want to ask about the consequenses of Lasik operation on the eyes?
I have lasik'ed my eyes about a month ago, but still, my right eye sees things in double, in a way that each thing (far or near) has a slight shadow to its right side). as the distance grows, so does the distance between the thing and its shadow. Is this condition temporary or constant? why has it happened (as it wasn't like this at the beginning) and does it require special concern or treatment?-
ANSWER:
I would be concerned and go see a doctor. That doesn't sound good. I had the procedure done about 5 years ago and never had a problem.

QUESTION:
Can double vision or ghosting after lasik operation be corrected with lenses?
I had lasik done 2 months ago and I'm experiencing a double vision off of lights on my right eye. A good example would be a credit screen at the end of the movie when the backround is black and the names are white. The name appears over, under, to the left and to the right of the actual name. Or the moon, which also ghosts in 4 directions can look like this.http://www.google.com/imgres?q=lasik+moon&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1440&bih=797&tbm=isch&tbnid=40K1d5keoy1tBM:&imgrefurl=http://www.lasik-flap.com/forum/viewtopic.php%3Ft%3D1665&docid=34EImwvdcgmvzM&w=1136&h=852&ei=UXmCTqjVIsHa0QGqjNmtAQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=422&vpy=150&dur=20&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=126&ty=100&page=1&tbnh=136&tbnw=203&start=0&ndsp=27&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0

QUESTION:
How safe is LASIK laser operation?
My number is -2 and I wanted to undergo LASIK laser operation but I have little doubt, why didn't laser surgeon himself try this thing. They wear spectacles why?-
ANSWER:
LASIK eye surgery is generally considered to be a safe and effective method of treating near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism and millions of people undergo this procedure every year throughout the world.
No surgery is without risks or complications, however, and this must be understood and accepted before making the decision.
The most common side effects of LASIK eye surgery are dry eyes and glare. The incidence of these are debated between proponents and opponents of the surgery. The FDA considers the risks to be low enough to approve the technology required for LASIK (microkeratomes, excimer lasers, etc.)
Safety can be increased by selecting a skilled surgeon using the best technology. Studies show that experience is one of the most important factors in selecting a surgeon.

QUESTION:
How long time should i take off the contact lenses before achieving the LASIK operation ?
and does it guarantee a good sight forever?-
ANSWER:
Hi – Contact lenses can “mould” the corneal surface, which changes the corneal curvature and may lead to a chance in your prescription. It is for this reason that it is very important for you to stop wearing contact lenses at some stage prior to your consultation and surgery. The amount of time required for your cornea to return to its natural shape depends on the type of contact lens you wear.If you wear soft lenses (daily wear, extended and toric) you should remove your contacts a minimum of 24 hours before your appointment. If you wear hard lenses, or rigid gas permeables, you should remove them a minimum of 4 weeks prior to your appointment. These are just guidelines, we recommend you ask your laser vision correction provider for their recommendations based on your specific situation.
With regards to how long the results last, LASIK is a permanent procedure. For the vast majority of patients, one treatment is all they need to correct common refractive errors. However, LASIK will not prevent natural age-related regression within the eye like presbyopia, the common eye condition which requires most people in their 40s – even those who have had LASIK – to start wearing reading glasses.

QUESTION:
what is cost for undergoing Lasik eye operation in india?
i want know cost of this eye treatment also tell me if there any risk after undergoing lasik .i want to stop wearing glasses permanently my eye power is -0.5. if any person who had undergone eye surgery plz share ur exp-
ANSWER:
Eye power of -0.5 indicates a mild astigmatism of like 1/2 diopter. If that is your entire corrective lens prescription and you really feel you need to wear glasses all the time, you'd be better off opting for contact lenses, rather than the dangers of Lasik. If you really want to have Lasik and you want it done in India and need costs, you can post your question on Yahoo India. I am sure they speak and read English. Also, remember to include your travel costs in the price of the surgery and think about follow-up visits, especially if you experience post surgical problems. In the USA, Lasik patients are usually followed up by their Lasik surgeon for two years. That won't happen in India. My nephew had lasik done early on and the surgeon was one of the pioneers in the field. Although his vision initially improved, he almost immediately started suffering the irreversible side effects of Lasik surgery, dry eye, halos, star-bursts and night blindness. Over time his vision became worse than it was prior to the surgery and he was severely myopic prior to surgery. In addition to the aforementioned irreversible side effects, he suffers from almost constant severe headaches. These irreversible side effects have led to severe depression of quality of life issues. Admittedly over the last 10 years, new Lasik surgical procedures have been discovered and more accurate Lasers are been developed making the procedure less dangerous now than it was a few years ago.
LASIK or Refractive Vision Correction surgery is laser surgery that can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. No one should have this surgery until they are absolutely sure their vision has stabilized, usually in your early to mid twenties, give or take several years. If you have the surgery prior to total vision stabilization, you will have to have the surgery repeated. LASIK is considered cosmetic surgery, is not covered by health insurance and can be quite expensive. Lasik is irreversible. Laser Vision Corrective surgery has only been in use for a little over 10 years, therefore the long-term side effect are unknown.
Anyone committing to Lasik must be prepared to accept the risks and side effects that are associated with this surgery. You must also thoroughly research your lasik surgeon and facility, the type Lasik procedure being preformed on your eyes and be very sure you are a good candidate for Lasik. Not everyone is.
Most people experience satisfactory to excellent post surgical results with an increase in visual acuity to between 20/20 to 20/40. The most common side effect of Lasik is irreversible dry eyes. However, there is still a small percentage (about 5%) who experience night blindness, halos, star bursts and loss of vision. These side-effects are usually permanent and often cause depression and loss of quality of life issues See "Sources" below for additional information on Lasik procedures and side effects

QUESTION:
If I make a Lasik Operation will I be able to join the army ,and if I can how many time does it take?
I want to be a Sniper-
ANSWER:
as far as i understand currently if you take the lasik eye surgery you can still join, because for a sniper you have to have 20/20 vision without wearing glasses or contacts. so by having the procedure if it corrected your vision to that then you would be able to join. when i went to MEPS 2 weeks ago there was a guy who was there solely to take the eye exam again because he wanted to go SEALS so he had gotten the Lasik procedure done so he could. good luck

QUESTION:
I want to me a sniper but i have myopia if I make a lasik operation will i be able to be a sniper?-
ANSWER:
According to the doctrine you are not disqualified from being a sniper if you wear glasses. However, if the infantry scout platoon that you are trying to get into chooses to limit there sniper positions to people with perfect sight that is there choice. I will tell you that Lasik is not a good choice when it comes to eye surgery and the military, especially for combat MOS's. When the procedure is carried out there is an incision in the eye which is opened and then the laser makes its corrections. The flap is then placed back but this flap will always be there. It never fully heals. The US army special operations command does not currently allow Lasik as far as I know. PRK is approved. If this is something you are committed to getting then make sure you do your research. I will say this much, its great to have goals and being a sniper is an outstanding goal. I loved every second of the job, even sniper school. But to get there you will have to be in an infantry rifle company first. Learning the basics of infantry operations and becoming a good small unit leader is extremely important before looking at the sniper / recon roles. Medically have all your ducks in a row, do your research and get it all documented so that you can prove that you have 20 / 20 vision with no complications. After that concentrate on the infantry job first then move forward into the sniper world. My biggest recomendation...ranger school , ranger school, ranger school. Once you do it you'll know why I said that. Good luck.

QUESTION:
How safe is lasik surgery (operation correcting eye vision) ?-
ANSWER:
Lasik Eye Surgery is very safe nowadays. It is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges Eye surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.I have also read that they arrange financing for American and Canadian patients, as dental surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
My cousin got her Dental and Lasik Surgery in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company. Hope this helps

QUESTION:
Had LASIK operation....?
I am 22 yrs old. I have had a LASIK operation on my eyes about 5 months ago. It is good most of the time. But sometimes my eyes become tired soon and I see the thing as they are foggy(especially when I have make up on my eyes). Is it normal?-
ANSWER:
I had PRK about 7 weeks ago...and I have noticed that at the end of the day when my eyes are tired, they become dry...and foggy. Same with flares of my eye allergies. What happens if you try artificial tears? Does that help?
I did finally just over the weekend get brave enough to try some mascara...and my eyes burned and were foggy until it dried. I haven't had that problem with just eyeliner and shadow...only 2 different brands of mascara I've gotten since my surgery.
My husband had LASIK about 2-1/2 months ago...and he has complained of a little blurring at the end of the day and he thinks it is dry eyes (he has been outside a lot for his job lately) due to some dusty conditions and some allergies.
Our surgeon told us that it is common and for us to expect off and on dryness for 6-12 months, some depending on environmental conditions, some allergens, and how humid the air is around us...they all can play a part in the dryness.
If it is really bothering you, call the surgeon who did your LASIK for their thoughts and possible treatments to try if artificial tears aren't working for you.

QUESTION:
Will you go for Lasik Operation?
Or be content in wearing contact lens or spectacles all your life?
They say Lasik doesn't suit all people, so you gotta take risk.-
ANSWER:
It depends on how bad your eyesight is. If you're eyesight is just a little to moderately bad then you're probably better off with the surgery. When you get into the higher levels of myopia the surgery my not correct your sight 100%.I hate wearing contacts but I'm one of those they can't guarantee my sight will be corrected 100%. I won't get it done unless I won't have to wear contact again.
Whatever you decide...make sure you get a good doctor who has lots of experience with the procedure. A friend of mine had to have a second operation to correct the mistakes from the first.

question concerning lasik operation...?
how much should I expect to pay for lasik procedure nowadays?...I only have about 3 months left before leaving for overseas, should I have it done? how long do I have to wait to see whether or not there's any complication? anyone know a good and reputable place to have it done near manassas,va?-
ANSWER:
LASIK operation is performed in a laser suite. You enter with your own clothes and shoes. Each step of the procedure is explained to you before the lasik procedure. For our really anxious patients, we have a physician who has been trained in psychiatry and who lived in the United States for many years. After your last questions are answered, you are asked to sign an informed consent form. If you are having a lot of anxiety, you are offered a capsule of Diazepam.

QUESTION:
Post Lasik Operation Questions / Concerns.?
Hello I am 20 years old and had the Wavefront Custom Lasik on both of my eyes back in August and I currently am experiencing a few issues. One, my day vision is very good (alot better than before) so I'm happy with that. However, my night vision is horrible especially with glare from oncoming lights while driving (I literally feel it's unsafe for me to drive at night) as I get blinded constantly and nearly drive off the road and unable to see obstructions. I tried to call my doctor but he says this is normal and should go away.. I'm doubtful. Also, I am noticing that my eyes are always red ish now where you can see all my veins, it wasn't like that up until about a month ago. I try using more drops but this actually causes my eyes to turn more red. If I don't use any drops my eye are red but its mostly that you can see the veins in my eyes, and that won't seem to go away. Any suggestions? I'm worried. Thanks-
ANSWER:
After the lasik operation, I noticed that halo glow coming from lights at night, but my night vision was much better than with glasses or contacts. I was also pretty sensitive to oncoming lights, and they had a really bad halo effect too. I did get used to it, and later on noticed that this effect had gone away about 3-4 months after the surgery. As far as redness, my eyes didn't experience that. I did do a lot of yawning to moisten my eyes, thinking this would get rid of the halo effect. I've always had problems with eyedrops, though, and prefer my natural tears.

QUESTION:
LASIK operation question ?
is it painful? is it worth it?and what is it like?-
ANSWER:
Not painful at all but be prepared for a nasty smell during the procedure. For me, it was definitely worth it. It was amazing how much more I could see just a day after the surgery. There was some initial discomfort (felt like sand was in my eyes) and lights have a little halo effect at night. Otherwise, it was easy. I'd do it all over again.

QUESTION:
is lasik eye operation safe?
is lasik eyesurgery safe?
i hate wearing glasses and look much much better without them.
should i just wear contacts or get rid of em forever by going for the surgery?
Haley,
thank you for a good answer-
ANSWER:
It is safe, but all surgery has its risks and complications. None are 100%. You have to talk to our surgeon and see what your needs are.If you are completely correctible w/ contacts, I would stay w/ them unless they bother you.
Ultimately, it's your decision!

QUESTION:
i am thinking of doing Lasik eye operation. At the same time very petrified of the risk, pain, etc.?
Would love to hear your opinions /experiences.-
ANSWER:
I had laser eye correction surgery three years ago, and I LOVE it. I had had glasses from the age of 4, and couldn't wear contacts, so I was just amazed at being able to see.
I had PRK surgery, which is a predecessor to LASIK. In LASIK, they pull back a layer of cornea and shoot the laser onto the eye, but in PRK, they laser through the cornea. With PRK it takes longer to heal, but it was necessary for me because I had had cornea injuries. So I can't tell you what it's like to have the cornea pulled back, but I will say a few things about corrective surgery in general:Be picky about who you have do it. I don't know where you live, but I'm in Boston, so I was able to have a man do my surgery who's one of the best in the world at laser surgery...which is awesome. It might be worth it to go to a nearby city to a doctor with a good reputation, who's done lots of LASIK and eye surgery procedures if possible. Make sure you feel comfortable with his or her demeanor and level of professionalism. Ask the people working in the office if they have had eye surgery, and if yes, who performed it. If everyone in his or her office had it done somewhere else, or hesitates to say that they WOULD have it done by this doctor, that's a sign that you should go elsewhere.
Talk to the doctor about what will happen if it doesn't take. Some people's eyes continue to deteriorate even after a successful surgery. My doctor had a policy that if I went to see him once a year for five years, if my eyes got worse within ten years he would do a touch-up for free. Since I was paying 00 for the procedure, it was a big deal to know my eyesight was guaranteed.
Don't worry! If you are comfortable with your doctor, and your doctor is experienced, things will go fine. As to the procedure itself: it is kind of weird. Did you ever see "A Clockwork Orange" where they have a little device that holds the man's eye open and they drop little eye drops into it to keep it moist? They use that device to keep your eye open, so you can't blink and screw it up, and in my procedure they had a red light I had to stare at while they were lasering me. They lay you back in a reclining chair, and you look up at the light and the asering device. I have never, ever concentrated so hard on a light, because I was worried about moving my eye and screwing things up, but it didn't take long at all, before I knew it it was over. They gave me a Valium before I had it done, so I was actually not too anxious, and they put numbing drops in your eye, so it doesn't hurt at the time at all. Again, I'm not sure about LASIK, but I had a few days of healing for my eye, and they gave me Tylenol with codeine to help with the pain. I could definitely feel when it was time for me to take another pain pill, but the pain was completely bearable. It's nothing to really fear.
Now I have perfect vision in both my eyes, and I have to say, I am so so so so happy that I got my eye surgery. I hope you can face your fears an get it, too. Good luck!
